Graham Hill – IT programmes

Sixty–year–old Graham Hill from Plymouth was made redundant from his job as an engineer in the Plymouth Dockyard in July 2004. In his spare time Graham enjoys woodturning, as well as sports such as football and rugby.

Graham said: "I had an awful time trying to find employment as I found most employers either didn’t answer my letters or said thanks, but you are too old. It wasn't said outright but the implication was there."

As he was out of work, Graham decided to look for courses that he could study online. He came across vision2learn and has never looked back.

"I wanted to do an online course basically because I’m not a classroom person. I like to be able to work at my own speed without someone looking over my shoulder."
"I have no qualifications such as GCSEs etc so I wanted to learn about how the computer could be more useful to me."

Graham has completed beginner and intermediate level courses with vision2learn. He has really boosted his confidence on the computer. He said:

"I have learnt a lot from the two courses, and yes I did find it a little difficult at times, but I persevered and what I didn’t know I would look up on the vision2learn website. I gained the satisfaction of completing a course and gaining qualifications, which I never thought was possible."

Graham quickly took to online learning and was very self–motivated. He said:

"Once I had started the first course I had no qualms about carrying on with it. I found it extremely interesting, especially as I knew very little about creating spreadsheets on Excel."

If Graham had any difficulties during the course, he could ask his online tutor for help and advice at any time.

"My tutor was brilliant and very, very patient, he said I had to resubmit a few of my assessments, but she was very helpful in her notes on where I had gone wrong. I would love to work with her again."

Graham added: "I have recommended vision2learn to a couple of my friends and I am hoping they will take it up. I couldn't sing your praises highly enough!"

Graham goes to show that there’s life after redundancy and he has used his free time to learn new skills and broaden his horizons.
